What I've Been Up To

Dr. Karen A. P. McGibbon is a distinguished educator, counselor, and researcher whose career spans over three decades in mental health, education, and community leadership. Based in Findlay, Ohio, she brings a unique international perspective, having developed expertise across both Caribbean and American educational and clinical settings.

Karen's educational path reflects her commitment to understanding and helping others. She began with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica (1990), graduating with honors. This scientific foundation provided analytical skills that would distinguish her throughout her career.

Her transition into counseling included a Certificate in Social Work (2004), and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Psychology and Counselling from St. Stephen's College, Canada (2011). She earned her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University (2015), and most recently, she completed her Doctor of Ministry at Winebrenner Theological Seminary (2023), focusing on theologically informed counseling.

While serving as Assistant Professor in the Master's in Clinical Counseling program at Winebrenner Theological Seminary since 2017, Karen coordinated the practicum and internship experiences while teaching clinical coursework. Her teaching philosophy integrates faith and professional practice, preparing future counselors to serve diverse populations.

Karen is a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Ohio and Jamaica, and a certified Happiness Coach. As a scholar-practitioner, she has authored workbooks and contributed to counseling literature as a book chapter author and co-author. She has presented at numerous national conferences and served as President of the Northwest Ohio Counseling Association (2020).

Her unique background—combining scientific training, international experience, clinical expertise, and educational leadership—positions her as a distinctive voice in the counseling profession. Dr. McGibbon represents the integration of academic rigor, cultural sensitivity, and deep commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others, embodying the global nature of mental health care and the universal need for understanding and support.

Dr. McGibbon has served at all levels of Christian ministry for over thirty years together with her husband Frank. God has blessed them with a wonderful son and daughter, a son-in-law, daughter-in-law and two precious granddaughters. For fun, Karen loves to cook, eat, go for walks in nature, ride her bicycle and listen to audiobooks.
